Biology I

Our Textbook
Biology I provides an introduction to the major topics covered in Modern Biology. Basic
themes which unite the study of biology are followed. These include the study of the
process of science or scientific method, levels of organization, unity and diversity, how
structure is related to function, adaptation and evolution, continuity of life,
homeostasis, and all life forms are interconnected. Goals are to acquire scientific
knowledge, develop process skills, increase critical-thinking abilities, recognize the
social consequences of advances in technology, and to foster positive attitudes toward
science in general. Topics include the study of cells, genetics, classification of living
organisms, and animal characteristics. The class incorporates lecture, laboratory
experiments along with dissections of representative animals, field trips, and library
research experiences to reach goals. Evaluation of progress is obtained primarily from
quizzes and tests over covered material. However the keeping of a notebook to contain
homework assignments, notes taken in class, library assignments, and handouts (puzzles,
drawings, and worksheets), classroom exercises, and attendance contribute heavily to the
final grade. The course is intended for students who plan to further in high school
science and for college bound students. Students who are curious or interested in biology
will also benefit.
